The Bok Tower Garden's Nursery strives to produce most of the plant material used in the organization, except large trees, turf, and large quantities of specialty plant material.
Plant material is primarily propagated from seed, cuttings, and divisions.
This position provides the opportunity to propagate, grow, and display annuals, bromeliads, orchids, Florida natives, perennials, seasonal color, trees, vegetables, and woody ornamentals.
JOB
Summary:
Responsible for all aspects of plant nursery operations:
propagation and growing of annuals and perennial plants, care and maintenance of nursery and display plants, integrated pest management (IPM), volunteer coordination, and various greenhouse and nursery operations.
DUTIES:
Carry out regular watering and fertilizing needs of the nursery plants by hand watering, programming irrigation clocks, checking irrigation lines, testing and tracking irrigation water and soil with the use of a portable meter, mixing and applying fertilizers and pesticides.
Maintain greenhouse climate conditions for plant health.
Inspect plants daily for growth and health needs.
Coordinate with Nursery Manager for insect and disease control using IPM methods.
Prioritize and carry out tasks to maintain the plants and nursery in a clean and orderly state.
Assist in tracking accessioned plant material, plant production data, pesticide and fertilizer applications, etc.
Source, propagate, and cultivate plant needs for the gardens.
Communicate effectively and work closely with the Nursery Manager and other staff members pertaining to plant production, plant health, facilities repair and maintenance needs, volunteer program, and other nursery issues and opportunities.
Supervise and instruct nursery volunteers in proper horticulture practices and tasks that meet the needs of the nursery.
Communicate production schedules with appropriate staff when needed.
Occasionally lead tours or teach horticulture related classes to school groups, summer camps and scheduled public events at Bok Tower Gardens coordinated through the Nursery Manager.
Create and maintain temporary and seasonal displays and arrangements, which includes preparing soil, fertilizing, planting, staking, trimming and moving plants out for display.
Holiday work, special events, emergency calls, and periodic weekend work will be required as assigned will be required as assigned.

in agriculture or horticulture, or 4 years' relevant experience.
Must possess a Florida Pesticide Applicators license and driver's license or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
QUALIFICATION:
Minimum four (4) years' experience as a grower in either agricultural or greenhouse production.
Hands-on experience with knowledge of planting, propagation, plant diseases, insect pests, fertilizing, soil matrices, soil pH, irrigation, seasonal planting cycles, pruning, strong emphasis in organic agricultural practice and integrated pest management.
Good attention to detail and organizational skills required.
Proficiency in Microsoft programs such as Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
Knowledge or willing to learn BG-Base preferred.
Have a curiosity to learn and expand your knowledge of horticulture.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Must be able to lift at least 60 lbs.
Continual or prolonged periods of time standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, crouching, and lifting.
Continuous communication and/or interaction with staff, volunteers, visitors, and management Must be able to perform strenuous physical work outside in the Florida weather year-round.
